All I want for Christmas

Apologies Mariah, it's way less romantic but for years I've been looking for a place that tracks progress on our most difficult social issues. The news can feel unrelentingly bad and yet... and yet I've had this unshakable feeling that progress is being made, we're just not often hearing about it.

Where are all the good news stories?

I think I've finally found them in the form of Solutions Journalism.

And just in time for Christmas (holiday reading).

Solutions Journalism focuses on in-depth reporting about:

  • WHAT the response is to a particular problem

  • WHY it matters

  • EVIDENCE for its success (or failure) and

  • WHAT'S NEXT - how it can be scaled or how it needs to evolve to be more effective

How good is that?

This site publishes the work of Solutions Journalists. It has a story tracker organised by theme (climate solutions, democracy, public health, racial equality etc) and draws stories from all over the world. It includes links to communities for students, educators and those who want to pitch solutions-based stories.

There's a good podcast that introduces the concept here if you're more into listening.

It's good. It's definitely my new addiction and deepest rabbit hole... and it's genuinely all I want for Christmas.

Check it out while you're in your post-Christmas cheese coma. And share the word!
